Within the Site Builder you build your Site structure, navigation and organization
Use the site builder to create one or more Sites. Add categories and subcategories to each site. Organize spaces, blogs and links into categories.
Site Features in Short
- Sites can be Full Sites or Single Space Sites
- Categories and subcategories can be dragged and dropped into a Site.
- Spaces can be dragged and dropped into a category or subcategory.
- A category and a site can be dragged to a new position in their respective menus.
- A subcategory can be dragged to another category or subcategory. Subcategories can also be dragged to a new position within the same category.
- You can select multiple spaces at once and drag them to a new position or category.
- Uncategorized spaces can be filtered based on their title, making it fast and easy to find the correct space.
- Links can be created and added to categories or subcategories.
- Themes can be added to the Global Site, or individually to Sites, Categories, Subcategories and Single Space Sites.
Full Site and Single Space Site
Full site, is the most common choice, and enables you to fit out a whole site with spaces, categories and theming on a site. A single space site is for those who want a stand alone site that sits within a space. It's possible to set a theme on a Single Space Site, and keep the rest of Confluence as the default Confluence.
Arrange your sites - reorder sites
When you are on RefinedTheme 6.1 or higher, you can reorder your sites. Go to Site Builder > Look above the Site tree for the Reorder button.
Drag-and-drop sites to arrange them.
The Global Site is always at the top and can't be order any other way.
Add Categories to your Site or Sites. You can add a Category module, a Blog module or an HTML module to a category and this will show in the category drop down menu. The Category Module is the most commonly used and with it you can organize spaces into that category.
To create a category simply press the Add Category button in a Site section. From here decide on a Category Module to create. Learn more about how to add categories to the site builder below.
The same type of modules are available when configuring the Footer.

By default a user will only have permission to see a category if it contains viewable content for that user. You'll find more information on the Category menu and the category permission system under Categories.

Site Builder Sections
By default the Global Site is the first point of entry for Confluence users. You can configure the category menu, global menu navigation (sidebar by default) and footer for this site under the Navigation tab. You can configure the global theme under the Configuration tab. Use the Site builder to implement the global category menu structure for the Global Site.
Each additional site also displays a category menu, global menu navigation, and can choose to adopt the global theme (default) or create an independent theme (under Themes tab). By default the navigation settings, theme and the footer will be the same as the global site, however it is possible to customize all of these independently.
To change the theme, navigation and footer settings on an additional site, click the settings cog in the Site section of the Site Builder and you will be taken to the Site's Configuration section.
Tip! Click the "view" button next to the Site title to navigate directly to a Site.
Within the Global Site or Independent Sites, you can configure Categories. On each Site, the categories will be directly accessible from a drop down category menu. In the category section of the site builder you can create new category modules, subcategories for existing categories and custom links to internal or external resources.
Create categories in each site and drag the relevant spaces to the categories.
To change the theme and connect users to categories, disable category homes and configure other category settings click the settings cog on the Category you want to edit. Visit Category Settings for more detailed instructions.

Move categories between sites
Starting in RefinedTheme 6.1, you can drag-and-drop categories between sites, keeping the structure of the categories intact.
The Blog Site is a blogging interface independent from your Global Site. As such, no categories can be added to the Blog Portal and you cannot add spaces or links. You can only drag blogs here.
Before RefinedTheme 5.1.0, the Blog Portal section will only be available in the Site Builder if the Blog Functionality has been enabled. This is done from the Blogs tab in the RefinedTheme admin section.
The spaces and blogs that are not organized into a category or the blog portal sit here. Use drag and drop to organize them.
You can search uncategorized spaces to find the spaces you want to organize quickly. Type in the search box and spaces matching your text will be filtered in the list.
- Filter on name to quickly find the content faster
- Use ctrl/cmd + click to select multiple entries to move to the same section or category
- Use shift + click to select a range of entries to move to the same section or category
Moving multiple content entries
In the Site Builder it's possible to drag and drop multiple items at once. To move multiple spaces, blogs or links between categories or from the uncategorized spaces container, you can use the keyboard to make selections. For Mac users, hold down the cmd-key while clicking on spaces or links to select them. Windows users can hold down the ctrl-key instead. On both operating systems, you can press the shift-key while selecting two spaces or links, which will result in all the items in between them being selected as well.
